THERE was a strong spirit of solidarity within the community in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), Kuala Lumpur, which saw some 100 people taking part in a National Day event.

It was heartening to see people coming together to celebrate the country’s independence in the simple yet meaningful event organised by the Abang Haji Openg Rukun Tetangga (RT).

There were performances, including patriotic songs sung by the young and the young at heart, as well as poetry and essay recitals.

The crowd waved mini Jalur Gemilang and sang together.

“It’s part of our mission to bring people together and foster the muhibbah spirit,” said Abang Haji Openg RT chairman Abdul Jabar Ahmad Junid.

“Although Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted and borders have reopened, some people still fear coming out to mingle.

“We wanted the community to slowly move away from the pandemic towards the endemic phase, so we also had a Hari Raya open house to dispel that fear,” he added.

Abdul Jabar said he was glad to see so many residents turning up and he hoped to have more such events in the future.

To further foster the Merdeka spirit, the RT committee members went door to door in the neighbourhood to hand out flags.

It also took the opportunity to present prizes to winners of a National Day-themed essay competition from SK Taman Tun Dr Ismail 2.

Also present at the event were Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, Kuala Lumpur City Hall Segambut branch manager Azlinda Saidin and community leaders from neighbouring areas. – By BAVANI M
