No Deepavali bazaar at Klang's Lorong Rembau after shop owners protest

Businessman, G. Pushpanthan shows the letter of objection against Klang Municipal Council's decision to place Deepavali Bazaar stalls on the parking bays in front of the shops at the narrow Lorong Rembau off Jalan Tengku Kelana in Klang's Little India.

THE organisers of Klang's Deepavali bazaar have been forced to change their plans after protests from shop owners along the proposed site at Lorong Rembau.

The shop owners feared that the pop-up stalls would block their frontage and deter customers from walking in.

The event, however, has not been cancelled but has been moved to the neighbouring streets of Lorong Tingkat and Jalan Tali Air.

Klang Municipal Council (MPK) Licensing and Hawkers Department director Azhar Samsudin said, "no festive stalls will be allowed at Lorong Rembau after all views of the stakeholders were considered," he said.

Lorong Rembau is a narrow alley off Jalan Tengku Kelana in Little India, Klang.

On Sept 9, StarMetro had reported that owners of the Lorong Rembau shop lots objected to the potential obstruction of their businesses after seeing MPK’s Licensing and Hawkers Department mark lines and numbers on the asphalt.

Azhar said all markings on the alley would be erased.

There are 10 shops along the alley that sell small gold items besides offering jewellery repair and piercing services.

Of the 10, nine shop owners signed a petition against the council’s unilateral decision.

Businessman G. Pushpanthan, 66, said MPK’s decision not to have the stalls positioned at Lorong Rembau was wise as the alley was only 6.3m in width and not suitable as a bazaar site.

Klang’s Little India Deepavali bazaar is scheduled to proceed from Oct 9 to 23 with 168 lots.
