THE Breast Cancer Resource Centre of Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) will be promoting breast cancer awareness through “MH-BIFRÖST RUN 2022: Run Against Breast Cancer” which will be held in conjunction with Pink October.
The campaign aims to raise diagnostic funds for B40 breast cancer patients while creating awareness of breast cancer prevention.
UMMC breast surgeon (oncoplastic) and advocate of Pink Awareness Campaign Associate Prof Dr See Mee Hoong said there was a high prevalence of breast cancer cases in Malaysia.
“It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women of all ethnic groups, with the highest prevalence among the Chinese followed by Indians and Malays.
“When cancer is detected at an early stage, there is more than 90% survival rate. With treatment, patients can live a normal life.”
She said Avon had donated RM100,000 and helped 33 patients, while RM100,000 was contributed by Medicos in 2021.
Meanwhile, UMMC is hoping to collect RM1mil this year to carry out more activities to promote early detection through screening and diagnosis.
The fund will also be used for research purposes and to help the B40 group in diagnosis and treatment.
Former deputy minister of women, family and community development Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun talked about her experience as a cancer patient at UMMC.
“I was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer last December. The team at UMMC gave me strength and joy.
“Breast cancer is the number one killer of women, but if detected early and treated immediately, the chances of survival are incredibly high,” she said.
Chew urged everyone to give their full support to the fundraising campaign so that patients could receive early treatment and stand a chance to live a healthy life.
During the press launch, there was a performance by Candy Girls, a breast cancer survivor group affiliated with UMMC.
The advisor of UMMC Candy Girls Support Group and UMMC Pink Warrior advisor Puan Sri Chelsia Chan, who was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer in 2016, said regular exercise was effective in reducing the recurrence of breast cancer.
eShoplive founder and chief executive officer Jorvy Tan said, “On top of fundraising through live broadcasting, eShoplive Asia will organise an offline event on women’s health.”
Meanwhile, eShoplive Asia chief brand officer Chiong Pei Pei said she would broadcast helpful information on breast cancer detection and treatment through live streaming.
The campaign received great support from many philanthropists and sponsors.
UOA Development Bhd managing director Kong Chong Soon said the company raised RM50,000 for the campaign while Ming Heng Group sponsored RM150,000 and Warren Sdn Bhd donated RM10,000 to the UMMC Breast Cancer Resource Centre trust fund.
