Celebrating students’ success

Prof Ruifang turned the tassels at Xiamen University Malaysia’s recent convocation ceremony.

XIAMEN University Malaysia (XMUM) held the fifth and final session of its second and third convocation ceremonies in Sepang, Selangor.

It was held for XMUM’s engineering, technology and science programmes, most of which are one year longer than those offered by other universities in Malaysia.

The additional year allows for a more solid and in-depth grasp of the fields of study, offering added value to potential employers.

Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific secretary-general Dr Tan Yean Chin attended the ceremony as the guest of honour and gave an inspiring speech.

XMUM president Prof Wang Ruifang turned the tassels on behalf of Xiamen University’s president in China.

The graduating classes of 2020 and 2021 have shown outstanding employment record with many joining industry-leading companies, such as Intel, Dyson, Huawei, Tencent, ByteDance, Lenovo, Western Digital, Shopee, Lazada, Grab, Deloitte, Bank of China, Top Glove, Jinko Solar and Shell.

Many have also received offers for postgraduate study from world-renowned universities.

In terms of research publications, under the guidance and supervision of faculty members, 49 of them published 34 papers in SCI journals during their undergraduate studies.

This impressive achievement was a result of the university’s continuous emphasis on research and innovation.

To date, XMUM faculty members and students have 1,022 publications in SCI journals, including 550 publications in prestigious SCI Q1 journals, such as The Lancet and Nature Materials.

XMUM students have also actively participated in many national and international competitions, achieving impressive results.

In recent years, XMUM has awarded scholarships worth more than RM23mil annually to its students based on various criteria.

The second and third convocation ceremonies of XMUM were held over five sessions on Aug 13, 14 and 27 for the graduating classes of 2020 and 2021, with more than 3,000 students, parents, faculty members and guests.

The other guests of honour for the sessions of the convocations were Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing, guest professors Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting and Datuk Seri Dr Hou Kok Chung as well as Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to China-cum-Malaysia-China Business Council chairman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

XMUM’s classes of 2020 and 2021 had a total of 1,769 graduands from 14 bachelor’s degree programmes and two master’s programmes, with 1,043 Malaysian students and 726 international students (including from China).

Some 959 students, along with their family members and friends, attended the convocation ceremonies in August.

Those who could not join the August ceremonies had the option to take part in one scheduled for the end of this year.

The university had considered holding online convocation ceremonies during the Covid-19 pandemic but decided against it because of the significance of the occasion.
