Clogged drains cause flash floods in Iskandar Puteri

One of the areas usually affected after a downpour is Taman Nusa Bayu in Iskandar Puteri.

TRAPPED debris clogging up drains and affecting road works near culverts has caused frequent flash floods in several areas in Iskandar Puteri, Johor.

Residents in Taman Nusa Perintis 1, Taman Nusa Bayu and Taman Pulai Indah had been complaining of flash floods which started more than a year ago, said Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) Medini zone councillor Joseph Fu.

“Flash floods usually take place near the residential areas when there is a downpour.

“This is probably due to rubbish and construction debris like sand in addition to dried leaves trapped in the drains.

“I also noticed that road upgrades and resurfacing works have caused the roads near the culverts to become higher and as a result, rainwater cannot flow smoothly into the drains,” he said when highlighting the issue at MBIP’s full board meeting.

He said having plants and trees along the roads could beautify the area but they would need to be maintained well to stop dried leaves and fallen flowers from clogging up the culverts.

Contractors involved in infrastructure works should also be mindful about adhering to the approved specifications to prevent inconvenience to the public, he added.

Fu said the council should take action against contractors for such violations, similar to the action taken against those who put up unapproved structures or carry out illegal renovations.

“Based on my observation of the ongoing road works near Jalan Persiaran Nusaria in Taman Nusantara, I am worried that similar issues may arise there.

“I hope the council can look into the matter to avoid flash floods in the area as it has been raining frequently lately,” he said.

Iskandar Puteri mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad told the council’s Engineering Department to look into the matter.

He also instructed Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation and waste management concessionaire SWM Environment Sdn Bhd to take action on the matters raised.
