Ipoh folk lament about poor rubbish collection via poll

A SURVEY conducted by Ipoh City Council (MBI) showed that the satisfaction level of ratepayers had dropped in the second quarter of the year.

Ipoh mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said MBI was aware that people’s dissatisfaction between April and June was because of several issues, mainly about uncollected rubbish.

“We carry out our surveys quarterly and are aware of the low satisfaction rate because of some issues that have affected the people,” he said after chairing a full board meeting.

“As for the current (satisfaction) level, we are not sure yet as the third quarter is ongoing until September.

“We hope to see some improvements as we continue to resolve related issues, especially with the new compactor trucks for our rubbish collection services,” he added.

It was reported in May that domestic waste in several areas in Perak, including Ipoh, had been left uncollected for weeks because of manpower shortage.

The issue was compounded by the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festivities, with the amount of waste generated being three times higher than the usual volume.

Rumaizi later launched two rear-end loader rubbish compactor trucks at MBI headquarters.

Costing about RM797,000, each truck is capable of loading up to 10 tonnes of rubbish per trip.

The mayor said the trucks had wear-resistant plating and were quite sturdy.

“They are built to withstand the acidic elements from the rubbish.

“With proper maintenance, the trucks can last up to 10 years,” he said.

Rumaizi said the compactors were part of four trucks bought this year at a cost of RM1.7mil.

Two trucks were earlier launched in July.

“We hope the trucks can help with the rubbish collection services and enable us to obtain the cleanest city status next year,” he said.
