FIVE Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) have been installed 500m apart at Penang Botanic Gardens, making it the first “heart safe” park in the country.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow told Buletin Mutiara there were plans to instal AEDs in other tourism spots.

There are now 42 AEDs placed at various locations in the state.

Chow expressed his gratitude to Penang Heart Safe Society (PHSS) for its commitment in ensuring public safety and health.

“The state has always been supportive of PHSS. It is important for people to know how to save precious lives when needed,” he said after launching the initiative at the park. Chow was then shown how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPS).

Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said seven lives were saved from 2018 to 2021 thanks to AEDs.

He added that Penang Botanic Gardens was chosen for the initiative as it was a popular place for recreational activities.

PHSS chairman Dr Luah Lean Wah said 30,000 people had been trained to perform CPR using AEDs since 2015.

“We hope we can cover more areas in the state,” she said.

Also present was Penang Botanic Gardens director Nur Syazwani Ismail.
