HAVING stopped working and without any source of income since 2018, a former nanny and canteen worker has been relying on her meagre savings and donations from Good Samaritans to survive.
Liew Yat Fong, 74, from Kampung Baru Bidor Barat in Bidor, Perak, said she sometimes received foodstuff from social workers and local non-governmental organisations.
Liew, who lives alone, said her savings were running low.
“I need to buy groceries, pay utility bills and get medicine to treat my eyes.
“I am planning to go for cataract surgery,” she said, adding that she had high blood pressure.
Liew used to receive RM600 to look after her niece’s daughter.
“When she left to study in Kuala Lumpur in 2018, I didn’t have any income anymore,” she said.
Social worker Yee Jee Kwong from Muallim Welfare Department said Tanjung Malim MCA member Alex Wong found out about Liew’s situation.
“We will help her apply for welfare aid.
“If her application is successful, she could get about RM500 every month as a senior citizen,” Yee said, adding that Liew did not have anyone to support her financially.
“More than 500 people in Tanjung Malim are now receiving monthly aid from the Batang Padang and Muallim community welfare offices after being assisted by MCA.
“Those who need aid can approach the Tanjung Malim (Bidor) MCA oordinator centre, village chiefs or district councillors.
“They can also come find me,” said Yee. — By IVAN LOH
