RM1.22mil allocated to tackle flood problems in Seri Serdang, S'gor assembly told

A TOTAL of RM1,222,550 will be spent on flood mitigation projects by the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) to overcome flood problems in the Seri Serdang area.

The projects will include: work on cleaning the Tenaga Nasional Berhad floodplain pond and other related work in Taman Serdang Jaya, Seri Serdang, at a cost of RM199,650 (now at 90% completion); and reservoir dredging work other related work at Taman Andalas Seri Serdang, at a cost of RM336,750 (at 80% completion).

Other projects include: dredging of Reservoir A and other related works near Taman Universiti Seri Serdang at a cost of RM341,149 (at 60% completion); and dredging of Reservoir B and other related works near the Seri Serdang Agriculture Department at a cost of RM345,001 (at 60% completion).

This was disclosed in a reply by Selangor infrastructure and public amenities, agriculture modernisation and agro-based industry committee chairman Izham Hashim to Ean Yong (PH - Seri Kembangan) in the state assembly on Friday (July 29).

Ean Yong had asked about the development and projects being implemented or planned to overcome flooding in urban areas under the jurisdiction of Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ).

Izham said on-site observation by MBSJ found that the cause of flash floods in urban areas was blockages in the drainage system especially in culverts; as well as the size of existing drains and culverts which were unable to accommodate water flow during heavy rain.

On the actions to resolve flood issues in Seri Kembangan and Seri Serdang, Izam said MBSJ would conduct annual drainage system maintenance through existing contracts; and also upgrade the drainage system, especially in flash flood hotspots.

"According to MBSJ, the issue of flooding in Seri Kembangan and Seri Serdang as a whole is caused by high rainfall resulting in the water level of Sungai Kuyoh and its tributaries (Sungai Kuyoh, Sungai Rekah, Sungai Pati Liat and Sungai Jinma) to overflow into low areas," said Izam.

He added that for long-term proposals, DID is implementing development projects including the Sungai Kuyoh flood mitigation plan, with an estimated cost of RM300mil, expected to be completed in the second quarter of next year.

This is planned to solve the flood problem in the Sungai Kuyoh basin such as Seri Serdang Park, Seri Kembangan, UPM and the Agriculture Department.

It will also include upgrading the drainage system in the Seri Serdang area at an estimated cost of RM15mil, which is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of next year.

The plan also aims to solve the flooding problem in Jalan 6, Taman Andalas, Taman Seri Serdang, and SK Seri Serdang.

Izham added that the Blue Water reservoir in the Seri Kembangan area, to be built at an estimated cost of RM4mil, is planned to solve the flood problem in the KTM Serdang area, the Besraya Highway and the entrance to Bluewater Estate.

The drainage system in the engineering building section of the Serdang Agriculture Department will also be upgraded at an estimated cost of RM2mil.

Izham said MBSJ would implement a drain construction project on Jalan BS 3/8 to solve the flood problem on Jalan BS 3/1.
