Klang is on its way to becoming a sustainable town as a recycling programme has been launched to cut 18% of domestic waste by 2030.

Households in the municipality produced 2.2kg of waste a day, resulting in 264,000 tonnes of rubbish being sent to the landfill last year.

Klang Municipal Council (MPK) president Noraini Roslan said a door-to-door recycling project was introduced in several neighbourhoods last month.

The pilot project is a public-private partnership between the council, Nestle Products Sdn Bhd and KPT Recycle Sdn Bhd.

Noraini said this was in line with the Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations, which encouraged such cooperation at local level.

“In the first two weeks of this project, we saw 20% participation from residents, which is a good start.

“Our plan is to run this programme for a year, after which it will be evaluated for its efficacy and impact on the communities involved.

“An assessment will also be made after the first six months to see if there are any aspects that need improvement,” she said during MPK’s full board meeting.

Among the areas involved are Bandar Bukit Tinggi 1, Bandar Bukit Tinggi 2, Bandar Botanic, Ambang Botanic 1 and Ambang Botanic 2.

Noraini said MPK had plans to expand a similar project to neighbourhoods in Klang Utara involving other private companies.

“Partnerships with the private sector allow the council to better service ratepayers, as opposed to acting alone.

“I urge the councillors to encourage residents and community leaders to participate in this project,” she added.

Separately, Noraini reminded ratepayers to pay their assessment before Aug 31 to avoid a RM20 late charge.

She said the public could access their bill and make payment online at ipay.mpklang.gov.my

She added that payment counters would be set up at selected Aeon malls next month for Klang folk to settle their assessment bills.

The counters will be at Aeon Mall Bukit Tinggi (Aug 6, 7, 13 and 14) and Aeon Mall Bukit Raja (Aug 20, 21, 27 and 28) from 10am to 6pm.

Noraini also announced a discount on compounds issued for selected traffic offences from Aug 22 to Sept 4.

“This involves compounds that are worth between RM15 and RM200.

“Compounds issued for parking in bays meant for the disabled or causing obstruction do not qualify for the discount,” she said.

Payments can be made online via ipay.mpklang.gov.my/home/kompaun or the Smart Parking MPKlang app.
