JOHOR government has approved six major infrastructure works totalling RM1.56bil to improve connectivity in the state, says its Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

The projects – ranging in value from RM800,000 to RM269mil – involve various districts, including Johor Baru, Kota Tinggi, Muar, Tangkak, Segamat and Batu Pahat.

“The state is set to be a pioneer in performance-based road concession contracts, having signed deals estimated at RM601mil,” said Onn Hafiz via a Facebook post on July 24.

He said the contract period between the Works Ministry and Selia Selenggara Selatan Sdn Bhd, which commenced last June, would last until February 2026.

He added that this approach was a more quantifiable key performance measure for services delivered by the companies appointed to ensure better quality roads in the future.

“The Federal Government has also channelled an allocation of RM126.23mil this year for the maintenance of federal roads in the state,” he said.

The six projects approved by the Works Ministry include the upgrade of the bypass from Matriculation College to Tangkak Industrial Area on Jalan Muar-Tangkak-Segamat at a cost of RM269mil, construction of median openings, U-turn and related works in progress from Parit Sempadan, Batu Pahat (section 21) to the bridge across the North-South Expressway (section 34.5) costing RM250mil, as well as upgrading works of the Pasir Gudang Expressway, which has been increased from four to six lanes from Bandar Seri Alam Taman Rinting to Pasir Gudang (RM155mil).

The other projects involve the construction of a directional ramp at the Senai Desaru Expressway-Bandar Penawar intersection worth RM129.2mil, upgrading of the Kota Tinggi bypass bridge (RM126.4mil), as well as road repairs and upgrading work in front of Hospital Sultanah Aminah (RM800,000).

Onn Hafiz thanked Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof for approving the road projects in Johor.

State works, transportation and infrastructure committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said the first phase of road works improvement and redevelopment would be done around the areas of Johor Baru and Kulai this year.

He said the state government had rescheduled some of the planned improvements based on the priority of the project.

“Priority is given to areas that are often affected by flash floods and have the highest population (Johor Baru and Kulai) in the state,” he added.

The state government, he said, would also request an additional RM2.9mil from the Works Ministry to upgrade roads around Hospital Sultanah Aminah.
