Perak government is ready to allow more Rukun Tetangga (RT) in the state.

State domestic trade and consumer affairs, national integration and civil society committee chairman Datuk Abdul Yunus Jamahri said there were currently 580 RT in Perak.

He said the matter could be looked into if there were more applications to set up Rukun Tetangga.

“If the RT meets all the requirements, there is no issue in approving it at the state level followed by the federal level,” he said when replying to a supplementary question from Datuk Samsudin Abu Hassan (BN-Ayer Kuning) at the state assembly sitting in Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan, Ipoh.

Earlier, Mohamad Zuraimi Razali (BN-Manong) had asked about the role and concept of Rukun Tetangga during changing times.

Abdul Yunus said that RT initially provided some form of security in residential areas.

He said that in 1983, the scheme was restructured to strengthen unity among the community.

He noted that in 2001, the government introduced the concept of community development to RT.

“This concept aims to empower the community to face current challenges.

“Then in 2010, the Rukun Tetangga Transformation Model was introduced which centred on five main thrusts, namely unity, economy, security, education and quality of life through Rukun Tetangga programmes and activities.

“In March 2020, the National Unity Ministry was established, with the National Unity and Integration Department parked under the ministry,” he added.

On the allocation channelled by the Federal Government to RT in Perak for this year, Abdul Yunus said it was RM3,108,000.

He said the state government had also channelled an additional allocation of RM580,000 to active Rukun Tetangga bodies in Perak.
