CHILDREN with special needs will have a place to stay and be well-taken care of once the Special Needs Community Centre (SNCC) is completed in Kuching, Sarawak.

SNCC will also be a place where these children will receive skills training and learn to be independent.

A site has already been identified for the project estimated to cost RM55mil under the 12th Malaysia Plan.

Sarawak Women, Early Childhood and Community Well-being Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah announced this during the closing of the sixth Special Olympics Sarawak State Games 2022.

She said many parents were worried that their children would be left behind.

“SNCC will be a residential home for people with disabilities and we will make sure that they will not be neglected if their parents pass away.

“We will be able to provide facilities to people with disabilities from the time they are born.

“It will have a diagnostic facility which will include early intervention and rehabilitation, as well as education and skills training.

“SNCC will only accommodate services that the Education Ministry is unable to offer, especially to disabled individuals who have more severe issues that are not easily integrated into mainstream education.

“Another key area of SNCC is to train individuals so that they are able to earn a living.

“We will also provide job matching to help them gain employment,” she said.

On the Special Olympics Sarawak State Games, Fatimah said it was a great success.

“Today, we have been able to identify athletes who could potentially be medal winners at national and international events,” she added.

The seventh Special Olympics Sarawak State Games 2024 will be held in Miri.
