PENANG’s first-ever rooftop concert will be held under the George Town Festival (GTF) 2022 banner on July 13.

The free concert, to be held from 8pm to 10pm at Kompleks Pulau Mutiara in Macallum Street Ghaut, will feature six-member multicultural group Culture Shot with actress and singer-songwriter Chelsia Ng on vocals.

Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi said residents living in flats near the venue could just open their windows or take a few steps outside to enjoy the music.

The band will be playing cultural beats, their own compositions and a selection of oldies.

“Those interested in attending the concert are encouraged to bring chairs and floor mats for their comfort.

“They must observe the Covid-19 standard operating procedures during the concert.

“There will be no live streaming so the only way to enjoy the music is to turn up at the venue,” Gooi said at a press conference.

He said the idea to hold the event at the open space was to allow for physical distancing.

“This is a very special venue as it is right in the middle of a community of flats dwellers, so the residents can literally stay at home to enjoy the concert.”

Penang-born Ng made her first appearance in the Malaysian English-language sitcom Kopitiam, as Rain.

She was also part of the local cast of Cantonese sitcom Homecoming and had a role in the film Salon in 2005 for which she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 19th Malaysia Film Festival the following year.

She was also in director Saw Teong Hin’s semi-autobiographical You Mean The World To Me in 2017 – Malaysia’s first Penang Hokkien dialect film.
