First Malaysian appointed head of professional construction body

THE Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), a 188-year-old establishment and the world’s most influential professional body for construction, recently appointed its 119th president.

Triterra Group joint chairman Datuk Seri Dr Michael Yam (pic) was announced as president for the 2022-2023 term.

Yam is the first Malaysian and second Asian to be given this prestigious role.

He has over 35 years of experience in the construction, real estate and corporate sector, not only in his home country but also in the United Kingdom, Australia and South Africa.

He has been a CIOB member since 1983.

During his first speech as president at CIOB’s annual members forum which took place virtually from June 28 to 30, Yam spoke of his intention to promote and improve sustainability in the built environment sector and the “gradual reset” needed to reach net-zero commitments along with his belief that sustainability will be a “catalyst for greater innovation and new skills”.

“I look forward to using my time as CIOB president to help bring about change to the sustainability agenda, along with our 47,000 global members who are well-placed to be hugely influential on this important matter that will affect all our futures,” he said.
