MOTORISTS can be seen driving slowly below the Jalan Pelabuhan bridge in Port Klang, to enjoy the colourful wildlife murals painted on its pillars.
Eight animals, namely dolphin, dugong, turtle, tiger, tapir, green crab, kingfisher and stork now adorn the concrete pillars, brightening the area.
Another four will be added, featuring port activities, to highlight the town’s history.
Khalis Zarin, 29, is one of those responsible for transforming the pillars into works of art.
Khalis was spotted by StarMetro embellishing the grey concrete pillars with vibrant strokes of green to depict a crab.
“Most murals I do are commissioned for public areas.
“It takes days to finish a mural, and the hours of brushwork leaves my hands and clothes stained with paint every day. But, I love it,” said the father of one daughter, Qaleesha, aged two.
At times Khalis’ wife Quraisha M. Kamal, 29, joins him to give inspiration.
Khalis said he would do research before painting a mural.
“I love deciding how to make it happen, from an idea in my head to a sketch to forming the outline on site,” said the artist who loved the challenge of transforming huge spaces.
Port Klang Authority (LPK) Property Department manager Sri Muhunan Rajaretnam said the murals had gained a lot of attention.
He is glad that the murals have brought joy to Port Klang residents and visitors.
“It has also lifted our employees’ spirits.
“The decision to commission the murals and the wildlife theme is in line with our mission to champion a sustainable environment,” he said.Muhunan added that the project – which costs about RM90,000 – was expected to be completed by mid-August.
Flood lights would also be installed to brighten the area under the bridge at night, he said. — By EDWARD RAJENDRA
