‘Jam at school caused by uncooperative parents’

Chieng discussing possible solutions with a traffic cop in front of SMK Sacred Heart.

A PILOT project to reduce traffic congestion on roads in front of two schools in Sibu, Sarawak, is facing challenges at one location as some parents do not want to follow the rules.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said the test project was for SMK Sacred Heart in Jalan Brother Albinus and Catholic High School in Jalan Lanang.

At SMK Sacred Heart, he said some parents refused to follow a stipulated queue to pick up their children after school.

“There are five lanes in front of the school.

“Three lanes are for the parents to pick up their children and the other two are for other motorists.

“But some parents insist on parking their vehicle on the two lanes meant for other motorists while waiting for their children,” he said.

Describing these parents as “stubborn”, Chieng said their selfish attitude was causing serious traffic congestion on that road.

He said he had received complaints from motorists that they were stuck for up to 45 minutes near the school.

The pilot project is scheduled to run until the end of the current school semester in September.

“After the pilot project, we will come up with a better solution to the traffic congestion in front of the two schools,” added Chieng. — By ANDY CHUA
