IN A competition to collect the most drink boxes, SJK (C) Chin Hwa in Pinang Tuggal, Kepala Batas emerged winner in the North Seberang Prai (SPU) district, Penang.
The event was organised by Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) in conjunction with Chinese New Year.
SJK (C) Chin Hwa pupils collected 181kg of boxes, earning them a 1.847kg per capita score to beat eight other schools in the district.
In second place was SJK (C) Kuang Yu in Kuala Muda, where pupils collected 35kg of boxes and earned 1.206kg per capita.
SJK (C) Aik Keow in Teluk Air Tawar collected 24kg of boxes, earning 0.6kg per capita and placing them third.
In the Central Seberang Prai (SPT) district, SJK (C) Jit Sin B in Berapit became the champion after collecting 358kg of boxes and earning 0.746kg per capita, beating eight other schools.
In second place was SJK (C) Chung Hwa 3 in Prai, which collected 116kg of boxes and earned 0.206kg per capita, followed by SJK (C) Beng Teik Pusat in Kota Permai, which collected 136kg of boxes and earned 0.125kg per capita.
Meanwhile, in South Seberang Prai (SPS) district, the champion SJK (C) Yoke Eng in Sungai Udang collected 40kg of boxes to earn 0.15kg per capita, while SJK (C) Kampung Jawi took second place with 19.5kg of boxes and an earning of 0.11kg per capita.
Third place went to SJK (C) Boon Beng, Simpang Ampat, which collected 10.5kg of boxes and earned 0.097kg per capita.
The cash prizes were sponsored by MBSP councillors Tan Chee Teong, Teh Chuann Yien and Heng Yeh Shiuan.
The first-prize winner took home RM500, while the second and third-prize winners received RM300 and RM200 respectively.
The winner in fourth place walked away with RM100, while consolation winners got RM50.
Tan said the main purpose of the programme was to educate students about recycling drink boxes the right way.
“Drink boxes contain three layers, namely paper, plastic and aluminium which must be recycled properly.
“The boxes collected in this competition will be sent to a factory in Shah Alam, Selangor, to be processed,” he said before the prize-giving ceremony at the MBSP headquarters in Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam.
The competition was open to Chinese vernacular schools in Seberang Prai, and the contest was adjudged on the per capita figures.
“This year, letters were sent to 38 schools and we received response from 23.
“The total weight collected this year was 1,483.5kg,” Tan added.
Each participating school also received a notebook donated by Tetra Pak Malaysia.
Tan donated urban farming kits to each school to encourage urban agricultural activities.
