Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) initiated a corporate social responsibility programme aimed at providing a platform for aspiring food operators in the SibuJaya township in Sarawak.
Its chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said he was inspired by a group of people and their creative plan.
“They had the idea but did not have enough capital to bring their plans to fruition, so they approached me for help,” he said.
He was also concerned that the absence of a viable plan might see aspiring food operators setting up business in unsuitable localities that would contribute to traffic congestion and face challenges maintaining food hygiene.
Sempurai and deputy councillor Wong Ching Yong reached out to SibuJaya’s master developer Amcorp SibuJaya Sdn Bhd to assist in the matter.
“The developer responded positively and sent its contractors and volunteers to bring new life to a spot in SibuJaya called the Buzz Station,” he said.
Located in front of Amcorp SibuJaya’s main office, the Buzz Station is essentially a fun food and beverage point.
“We wanted something fun and vibrant, and the developer did not disappoint,” said Sempurai.
Two disused buses and a lot of hard work turned the empty space into a retro-looking zone with funky coloured light tubes and light balls adding to the vibe.
The Buzz Station @ SibuJaya would also be a springboard for future events, said Sempurai.
He is scheduled to launch the Buzz Station tomorrow at an event featuring a performance by popular Iban singer Lucy M.
Besides its potential as a festival and camping ground or just a cool hang-out place, it could also serve as a platform for SibuJaya youths to hone their creative talents by busking or managing food and beverage kiosks, he said.
