Selangor government is planning to organise specialised job fairs for athletes and former inmates to find employment.

Selangor human capital development, sports and youth generation development committee chairman Mohd Khairuddin Othman said such job fairs that targeted specific groups would increase the individual’s chances of getting a job.

“We want to help those with sporting backgrounds to get suitable jobs by matching them with employers who seek people with such skills.

“Similarly, we want to have a separate job fair for former inmates to address unemployment problems among them,” he said at the launch of Selangor Job Portal, a job-matching platform for employers and jobseekers, at Universiti Selangor (Unisel) in Shah Alam.

He said the website www.selangorjobportal.com.my would be an avenue for jobseekers to pre-register their resumes for the Selangor Mega Job Fair that was making a comeback after a two-year hiatus.

Over 100 companies are expected to participate in the job fair that will be held on June 11 and 12 at MBSA Convention Centre, from 9am to 5.30pm, offering more than 20,000 vacancies.

This event is returning after two years of scaled-down versions conducted at district level, both physically and virtually, because of Covid-19 standard operating procedure.

Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, who launched the job portal, said pre-registration would help with crowd management at the fair as the country was still in transition to the endemic phase of Covid-19.

Commenting on the unemployment rate in Selangor, he said the figure had remained below 4%, which was still within the acceptable range.

He revealed that the unemployment rate in the first quarter of the year was 3.2%.

“The 3.2% or 118,100 people represented those who were in between jobs.

“The unemployment rate for the fourth quarter of last year was recorded at 2.9% (105,300), which was very good.

“Some jobseekers do not know how to go about getting work, so such programmes will help connect them with the right employer.

“Some employers at the fair will be conducting on-the-spot interviews.

“I hope the job fair will be a success and some 20,000 Selangor folk will find employment,” said Amirudin.
