A HOST of interesting programmes will be held during the Penang Hill Festival 2022 (PHF2022), which is back after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Visitors can expect a series of exciting activities meant to promote greater awareness of Penang Hill’s nature, history and cultural heritage from Aug 5 to 7.
It is also the first time the festival will be held following its listing as the latest Unesco Biosphere Reserve.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who is also Penang Hill Corporation chairman, said: “The PHF2022 is historic as we not only celebrate the hill but also its latest recognition as a Unesco Biosphere Reserve.
“The objectives of the festival are to spur Penang Hill as a great example of environmental and heritage conservation as well as serve as a platform to educate the public on Penang Hill’s history.”
There will be a Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve Panel Session for people to learn about the listing and what it entails since its accreditation on Sept 15 last year.
It will be chaired by a panel comprising Prof Dr Siti Azizah Mohd Nor, Prof Sr Dr Mastura Jaafar, Dr Nadine Ruppert and Dr Abe Woo Sau Pinn.
In “The Timeless Journey of Penang Hill” talk, one can learn all about Penang Hill’s journey to become the hill resort of choice in Malaysia.
Visitors can also learn about the construction and the operation of the Penang Hill railway services in another talk session.
Experts will share about hidden natural gems of Penang and the importance of preserving them in “Research and Conservation of the Rare Flora of Penang” session.
The signature event – “Music on the Hill: East Meets West” – is back by popular demand.
One can enjoy the musical performances by Tonal Alchemy featuring Ray Rozells, Milky Way Chinese Orchestra and Wak Long Music and Art Centre.
There will also be guided heritage and nature discovery walks for visitors to explore the hill.
The highlight will be the Night Exploration, jointly organised by NatureWalks@PenangHill and The Habitat Penang Hill.
Visitors may discover the nocturnal creatures that come to life under the cover of darkness in the pristine and ancient rainforest of Penang Hill.
They can trek along the Heritage Trail and the Viaduct Trail to see myriad flora.
The Penang Hill Photo Exhibition will showcase old photographs of Penang Hill, with some of them dating back as far as the 1800s during the British colonial times.
There will also be a Penang Hill Festival Photography Contest 2022 themed “Pesona Penang Hill”, where participants stand a chance to win prizes.
