ABOUT 100 volunteers took part in a gotong-royong event at Kampung Simee in Ipoh, Perak.

The participants managed to collect over 20 bags of garbage in the area.

Canning assemblyman Jenny Choy said the clean-up activity had been held several times to ensure the area was free from illegal dumping.

“A few years ago, we distributed over 700 garbage bins for folks in Kampung Simee and placed signboards with messages warning people not to litter.

“There is one illegal dumpsite left in Kampung Simee and we plan to place a signboard there as well,” she told reporters after the programme.

“Based on the amount of rubbish we collected, it is a bit worrying that people living in the city seem to not care about (proper) waste disposal.

“Among the things we found were cigarette butts, plastic bottles, used face masks, polystyrene containers and plastic straws,” she added.

On Oct 15, 2019, households in Kampung Simee received 120-litre rubbish bins while shops were each given 240-liter bins.

The orange bins were also marked and numbered to prevent disputes and discourage theft.

Choy said they would continue to hold more gotong-royong events to ensure the area was clean.

“Even if it’s just a small event, our goal is to keep our area beautiful and clean.

“Occasionally, we will have companies joining us to conduct their corporate responsibility programme where they volunteer to do cleaning together with the community,” she added.
