A FUTSAL court in SS4A Petaling Jaya has been refurbished with high-density polyethylene net costing RM26,800 as it is more durable than wire-mesh fencing.
The project was funded by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) councillor John Leong, Bandar Utama assemblyman Jamaliah Jamaluddin and Damansara MP Tony Pua.
Jamaliah said residents had complained in 2020 that the futsal court’s fence was damaged due to wear and tear.
Some of the screws holding the fence together had come loose while others were missing, making it dangerous for court users.
“The futsal court was neither safe nor conducive as its fence was damaged.
“We proposed to MBPJ to replace it with the high-density polyethylene net.
“The net can be lifted if players want to move in and out of the court without using the main gate,” said Jamaliah, pointing out that the unsecured bottom of the net allowed for easy access.
This would help prevent incidences of vandalism as previously, outsiders would cut the fence to enter the court, she highlighted.
She said former footballer and coach Datuk Khaidir Buyong was consulted on the net’s durability.
“We also consulted MBPJ with the findings and received approval to instal it.
“This is a pilot project because if the net is found to be more durable, then it can be installed at more futsal courts,” she said of the 3.7m by 80.4m fence encircling the court.
“We are happy with the new fence,” she added.
The court is under MBPJ management.
Futsal enthusiast Mohd Hafez Mohd Suhaimi, 35, said the court, frequented by residents and nearby communities, was crowded in the evenings and on public holidays.
“The fence was in bad shape. We are thankful that it has been replaced with this netting.
“We hope it will last for many years,” he said.
