Seven strays caught in Petaling district tested for rabies, says PJ mayor

SIX stray dogs and a cat caught near sites of reported animal attacks have been sent to the Veterinary Services Department for tests as a precautionary measure.

They were caught in the vicinity where two cases of dog bites and two cases of cat scratches were reported by Petaling Health Office as of April 15.

The action was taken because of a confirmed death due to rabies in the Petaling district on March 10, said Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Azhan Md Amir during the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) full board meeting yesterday.

He said the city council was educating the public about the danger of rabies, including its symptoms.

On April 24, Selangor Health director Datuk Dr Sha’ari Ngadiman confirmed the second rabies case in the state, an 85-year-old man from Pulau Carey who is being treated in Klang.

On dengue, Mohamad Azhan said there were 91 cases reported between April 10 and 16, a 16% increase from the previous week, which recorded 78 cases.

He also said MBPJ staff who had been using on-street parking lots would be asked to park at its headquarters as well as at Kompleks A and Kompleks C multi-storey carparks to free up on-street bays in Section 52.

He said the commercial centre, known as Petaling Jaya New Town or PJ State, had insufficient on-street parking space.

On Ramadan bazaars, the mayor said 217,664 visitors had been recorded at 18 bazaars in the city as of April 20, with the three busiest being SS6/1, Kelana Jaya; Section 4, Kota Damansara and Apartment Vista, Damansara Damai.

The number of visitors was up by 40% compared with last year.

A total of 5,315 traders were inspected and 70 compounds and 116 notices were issued for a range of offences.
