SIBU is expected to see massive development in the next five to 10 years with the implementation of the Bukit Assek master development plan.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the development was expected to transform the timber town into a modern and progressive one.

“The development plan encompasses a 40ha plot.

“Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg will make a major announcement soon on the project that will involve a huge sum of money,” he said at the launch of the Bukit Assek Service Centre.

Dr Sim, who is also Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president, said Abang Johari had seen and commended the plan “but he wants a better one, that was why he told us to go down to Australia to see what the latest is”.

The master plan, he said, needed to be revised as it was drafted seven to eight years ago.

Dr Sim said the project was expected to make the town more liveable.

“Everybody agrees that Bukit Assek (which is in the heart of the town) needs urban renewal to solve traffic congestion and flood problems.

“When the area is rejuvenated, both the rich and B40 group can live there,” he added.

Dr Sim said there would be a hike in construction activities when the work starts.

Meanwhile, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said with the opening of the service centre, they would be able to provide better service to the people in the area.

“Our SUPP beat team will also set up a mobile unit that is able to provide services 24 hours a day for the people,” he said.

Among those present at the function were SUPP deputy president Chieng Buong Toon, vice-president Datuk Lee Kim Sim, secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew and Pelawan assemblyman Michael Tiang.
