Mayor Datuk Johary Anuar is pleased that Subang Jaya City Council’s (MBSJ) green initiatives have been well-received by visitors and traders to Ramadan bazaars.
“This year, the city council has been encouraging bazaar-goers to bring their own reusable containers and use cashless payment methods at all 16 Ramadan bazaars,” he said during a walkabout at a the bazaar in USJ 4.
Johary added that the vouchers worth RM5 would be given out on a first-come, first-served basis at all Ramadan bazaars under the city council’s purview every Wednesday to encourage people to bring their own food containers to reduce single-use plastics.
USJ 2 resident Effenby Tay, 71, said he was happy to receive a voucher for the first time.
“Getting discounts like this will motivate more people to bring their own containers to the bazaar,” he noted.
A trader who wanted to be known as Nur Afifi, and sells grilled chicken at the bazaar, said he was comfortable using the cashless payment method as he could check his daily income.
“Previously, I had to go to the bank to deposit what I earned but now, I can skip this process and just transfer money easily to or from my bank account,” he said.
Additionally, MBSJ has been encouraging traders to recycle their used cooking oil as well as reduce polystyrene and plastic straw usage as part of its green campaign. — By DARISHINI PRIYAA DEVADAS
