FIFTEEN students from the Mawarku Girls’ Home for Orphans and the Poor in Seremban were delighted to receive personal use items and stationery from SWM Environment Sdn Bhd.

The students were also treated to sahur (pre-dawn meal before fasting) by the waste management concessionaire in conjunction with Ramadan.

Its corporate general manager Mohd Norlisam Mohd Nordin said the programme was part of the company’s “Kasih Santun Ramadan” initiative which was to support residents in welfare and other homes.

“This annual corporate social responsibility programme focuses on needy groups, particularly orphans and the poor,” said Mohd Norlisam.

The company also contributed RM1,000 to the home to help with its expenses.

At the event, the home was also registered under SWM’s KITARcycle initiative, which was a reward-based recycling programme that allowed members to collect points through recycling practices and then redeem them through online money transfers.

“We want to encourage them to start recycling.

“The cash rewards can also be used to reduce the home’s operating cost,” he said.

To be eligible for points, members must first segregate general waste from recyclables and place them in a package with the member’s unique QR code or membership ID pasted onto it.

A total of 25 items can be recycled in return for points.

They include paper or related products, plastics, metals, batteries, electronic items like laptops, computers and related parts, smartphones, television sets and glass bottles.

“This way, the public can also help the home by sending them items that can be recycled,” said Mohd Norlisam.
