Garbage collection services by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) will be boosted for the upcoming Chinese New Year festive period.

MBPP public health and licensing committee alternate chairman Nicholas Theng said there would be more frequent pick-up stops for domestic and bulk waste.

“More multi-lift bins will also be placed at public markets.

“Domestic and bulk garbage collection services will be increased leading up to Chinese New Year,” he said during a press conference at City Hall in George Town.

“For domestic waste from landed residential premises, garbage collection will be carried out three times weekly until Chinese New Year day.

“For multi-storey residential premises, garbage collection will be carried out daily except Sunday throughout the week until the festive day.

“As for bulk waste, MBPP is providing additional bulk waste collection services from Jan 19 to 31.

“If there is too much bulk garbage to be disposed of, the people may contact the council for special services by calling 04-282 4284 during council office hours.”

Garbage collection for communal barrel and multi-lift bins will be carried out twice daily from now until Jan 31 as more garbage is expected from households celebrating the festival.

“Collections are carried out between 4am and 10am as well as noon and 4pm,”said Theng.

On the additional multi-lift bins being placed at public markets, Theng said the bins would provide convenience to the community to dispose of bulk garbage such as old furniture, mattresses, pillows and others.

“They will be put at some public markets which are often waste disposal hotspots during the festive period.

“There will be additional bins placed at the markets in Pulau Tikus, Sungai Ara, Campbell Street, Batu Lanchang, Taman Free School, Ayer Itam and Bandar Baru Ayer Itam.”

He also reminded the people that the council would be strict and against any of its staff or contractors claiming or accepting angpow while carrying out garbage collection or cleaning services.

For further enquiries on the garbage collection schedule, call the MBPP hotline at 04-263 7637 (24 hours).
