Kudos for keeping heritage alive

IT WAS was another red-letter day for Hameediyah Restaurant when it was presented with Platinum Status under the Cultural Continuity Recognition Award.

Restaurant owner Ahameed Seeni Pakir Abdul Sukkoor, 67, said they were proud and honoured to win the distinguished award.

“This is a recognition for Hameediyah, which has been serving the people with good curries for over a century.

“Our food is enjoyed by people of all walks of life and now, as a seventh generation handler, I am very happy with the recognition.

“We hope to continue serving as long as we can,” he said during the George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) Heritage Recognition and Awards ceremony.

Wushu and Taichi master Tang Ah Wa @ Tang Chin Yong, 81, who received the award for Dedication on Knowledge Transmission, gave a speech on behalf of all the recipients.

“We are all very grateful and honoured for these awards. It is a form of recognition and encouragement for all of us.

“As practitioners of arts, cultural heritage and skills, these awards show that our efforts in working silently and tirelessly all these years have not gone unnoticed.

“It encourages us as custodians of culture and heritage. We hope everyone can continue working together with us to preserve and safeguard our cultural heritage,” he said.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who presented the awards to the recipients, said the GTWHI Heritage Recognition and Awards ceremony was aimed at honouring individuals and groups with exceptional contributions to the maintenance of the Outstanding Universal Value of the George Town Unesco World Heritage Site.

He said there were 22 recipients for the Lifetime Achievement Award in four fields.

The fields were in ‘The Mastery of Skills’, ‘Dedication on Knowledge Transmission’, ‘The Merit on Outstanding Efforts and Dedication’ and ‘The Merit on Cultural Heritage Advocacy’.

Meanwhile, GTWHI general manager Dr Ang Ming Chee said a total of 78 recipients made it to the GTWHI Recognition and Awards in four categories.

The categories were the Conservation, Enhancement and Adaptation Awards, Cultural Heritage Events and Activities Awards, Cultural Continuity Recognition Awards and the Lifetime Achievement Award announced back in April 2021.

After the awards ceremony for recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award at Bayview Hotel, Chow and Dr Ang visited a few other recipients in George Town to deliver the awards to them.
