HULU Selangor is poised to become Malaysia’s transport manufacturing hub, says Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the existing industrial clusters were the biggest contributors, comprising 60.5% out of total investments for the industrial sector in Hulu Selangor.

Amirudin said the population of Hulu Selangor now was about 237,600.

“Hulu Selangor has made big strides by intensifying development and progress in all areas in line with Selangor’s mission in ‘Sustaining Development and Prosperity Symmetrically, Smart and Caring for the People’,” he said.

He was speaking at the launch of the virtual ceremony to commemorate the upgrade of Hulu Selangor District Council to Hulu Selangor Municipal Council (MPHS) this year with an official declaration by Selangor Ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, on Oct 21.

Aside from the name change, the municipal council also unveiled its new logo.

A virtual ceremony was held via MPHS’ YouTube channel and Facebook Live.

The district council was formed on Jan 1, 1975, carved out from the then Asam Kumbang Local Council and Kalumpang Local Council.

MPHS’s administration area covers Hulu Bernam, Kalumpang, Kerling, Kuala Kubu Baru, Rasa, Batang Kali, Hulu Yam, Serendah, Sungai Choh, Bukit Beruntung, Bukit Sentosa, Sungai Buaya and Lembah Beringin.

Hulu Selangor, which spans over 175,630ha, is also the largest district in Selangor — almost 22% of the entire state.

Kuala Kubu Baru is the administrative centre for Hulu Selangor and was recognised as the First Planned City in Malaysia and First Garden City in Asia.

Amirudin added that the industrial sector was one of the major contributors to Selangor’s economy.

“In line with that, the Selangor Structure Plan 2035 has clustered industrial areas according to the capabilities and potential of the existing industrial zones.

“The two clusters proposed in Hulu Selangor are the automotive and support industry cluster in the lower Choh-Bukit Beruntung river known as the National Automotive Hub and selected ‘Clean Industry’ clusters in the Beringin-Bernam Jaya valleys.”

Revealing the early history of Hulu Selangor, Amirudin said tin ore was a major product in the district with the opening of major cities and towns based on tin ore activities such as Serendah, Kuala Kubu and Rasa.

“An event in 1883 known as the Kuala Kubu Sinking Tragedy took place when sinking occurred due to the rupture of a dam in Sungai Kubu.

“The dam was built for tin ore activities that was actively carried out in Kuala Kubu, and the incident sunk the entire city of Kuala Kubu.”

He revealed that the British at the time ordered Charles Compton Reade, the first government town planner in the Town Planning Department in the Federated Malay States, to redesign the new administrative centre for Hulu Selangor.

“Reade designed a new centre based on the Garden City concept pioneered by Sir Ebenezer Howard.

“The new town of Kuala Kubu was renamed Kuala Kubu Baru in 1930.

“On Jan 1, 1975, Hulu Selangor District Council was entrusted as the development authority in Hulu Selangor.”

Earlier in his speech, MPHS president Mohd Hasry Nor Mohd said in line with the Hulu Selangor District Local Plan Development Goals 2035, six key initiatives had been outlined to make Hulu Selangor a sustainable, liveable and resilient place.

The initiatives are conservation of heritage and natural resources; sustainable community environment; application of the Smart Development concept; road communication system and efficient infrastructure; attractive investment package offerings to generate an urban economy that can provide employment opportunities to accommodate population growth by 2035; and effective and competitive human capital development.

“The Selangor North Gate Development Vision is our aspiration for the future of Hulu Selangor and it is in line with the Hulu Selangor District Local Plan 2035 aim to have a population of 500,000 by 2035,” concluded Mohd Hasry.
