A MISSING drain cover in Jalan Wan Sendari 3 in Taman Sri Endah, Kuala Lumpur, has finally been replaced much to the relief of residents.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) contractors had on Oct 5 completed the task, three months after it was first reported to its one-stop hotline.
DBKL explained that the delay in fixing the drain cover was because it had to be measured before being reinstalled.
Restrictions imposed during the movement control order was another reason for the delay.
DBKL said in a statement that during an initial inspection of the site, officers discovered that the original cover, which was a steel grating, had been replaced by a stone cover by a resident.
DBKL said the stone cover collapsed from the impact and high load pressure over time from vehicular traffic.
The statement added that unlike metal grating, which was more durable and designed for high impact, the stone cover was unable to withstand high pressure, making it more fragile.
Since it would take time to reinstall a similar grating, DBKL said it had used a wooden cover to temporarily close the exposed drain while waiting for a new grating to be measured and fitted to ensure safety.
DBKL urged residents not to remove drain covers on public roads as they were city assets and could endanger motorists if done without proper procedure and specification.
DBKL was responding to a report in StarMetro titled “DBKL one-stop hotline ineffective” whereby several residents complained that their concerns were not being addressed by the local government.
Meanwhile, on another issue, DBKL said it immediately acted on residents’ complaints in Taman Maluri, Cheras, regarding the deplorable conditions of a public park in Jalan Pria.
The authority said the bad conditions were a result of a thunderstorm that happened in May.
Due to the damage the park sustained, DBKL has sealed off the site.
The storm had damaged facilities including a jogging track, the children’s playground area, benches and futsal court.
DBKL is in the midst of upgrading the park and fixing the damage.
