THE Penang Hill funicular train service will be shut down temporarily for its 2022 bi-annual scheduled maintenance.

Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) in a statement said the train service would be temporarily closed on Nov 16, 17, 23, 24 and 30, and Dec 1, 7 and 8.

It said the maintenance was initially scheduled to be carried out in January next year.

“For public convenience and to ease the burden of vendors, PHC rescheduled the maintenance on Tuesdays and Wednesdays over four consecutive weeks during the period,” the statement said.

PHC also said the bi-annual funicular train maintenance was a routine activity that must be carried out as recommended by the manufacturer.

It said the work would ensure that the funicular system is always in good and safe condition.

“With national borders closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the maintenance works were postponed indefinitely as the manufacturer’s engineers, Garaventa AG from Switzerland, are unable to travel here.

“So, the maintenance works will now be carried out by PHC’s Funicular Operations division.

“The number of maintenance sessions will also be increased as part of safety and control measures to ensure that the funicular system is always in tip-top running condition and meets stringent safety checks.

“The bi-annual funicular maintenance originally scheduled for the first quarter next year will now be carried out earlier as PHC is anticipating that the tourism sector will slowly recover by then.

“This is following the projection of the nation achieving herd immunity by the fourth quarter of this year under the National Recovery Plan.

“This is also to ensure that the vendors at Penang Hill will be able to resume their business and economy activities after facing a difficult period throughout the Covid-19 pandemic,” the statement said.

Visitors may opt for the 4WD vehicle service operated by Penang Hill Residents Association at the entrance of Jeep Track which is located nearby Penang Botanic Gardens or the existing hiking routes to reach the top of Penang Hill during the shutdown period.
