Johor sports development plan aims for economic revival

Onn Hafiz says VSN2030 will be implemented as one of the new economic sources for Johor with the introduction of sports tourism.

THE Johor Youth and Sports Department will work closely with the Johor Sports Council (MSNJ) to prepare the state’s National Sports Vision 2030 (VSN2030).

Johor tourism, youth and sports committee chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said VSN2030 was an important sports development plan to gather information on the projection for the next 10 years before its implementation.

“We are devising a sustainable policy for the sports industry through inclusive ideas and well-planned development, aside from optimising all existing sports resources and facilities.

“The collective input we have is gathered from all sports stakeholders in the state, namely industry players, government and private sectors, higher learning institutions and individuals,” he told StarMetro.

He added that Johor’s sports development vision would be planned meticulously to cover current and future sports programmes.

Onn Hafiz also said VSN2030 would focus on the development of sports and it would be implemented as one of the new economic sources for Johor with the introduction of sports tourism.

“It is the vision of the state government to create a healthier lifestyle for every Johorean.

“At the same time, we hope it can also be one of the new ventures we can pursue to revive our economy.

“This is in line with our local initiative through the Johor Sports Master Plan 2030 that aims to transform the state into a sports powerhouse in South-East Asia.”

He added that the plan would also lead to more job opportunities for locals.

Meanwhile, Sports Johor chief executive officer On Jabbar said the Johor Sports Master Plan 2030, which was supposed to be introduced this year, has been put on hold due to the pandemic.

He said the first phase of the discussion was held last year and they were waiting for the right time to fine-tune details of the plan.

“The plan will lead to Johor having the largest sports committee that oversees all sports development programmes in the state by having all key industry players under one roof.

“We have completed the preliminary discussion for the plan and the next meeting will be held once the pandemic situation is under control,” he added.

The Johor Sports Master Plan 2030 aims to create a sustainable sports ecosystem in the state, aside from creating jobs, learning opportunities, events, sports technology and research, as well as from promoting sports tourism.
