SIBU residents are advised to be more vigilant and double mask when in crowded places as the Delta variant is said to be more contagious.
Sibu Divisional Disaster Management Committee coordinator Dr Annuar Rapaee, in his Covid-19 update via Facebook Live, said double-masking provides additional protection.
“If you are going to crowded places such as supermarkets, I advise you to wear two face masks,” he said,
The Nangka assemblyman also advised those who have had close contact with positive cases to isolate themselves and take a swab test.
“The Delta variant is very infectious so please isolate yourself immediately if you have had close contact with a positive case and not wait two to three days to do so.
“For those who have had their second dose of the vaccine, do not go out within the two-week period as your immunity would be very low then,” he said.
On inter-district travel, Dr Annuar said he hoped residents would postpone going to Kuching and places in the Southern Region which have the most number of Delta variant cases in the state.
Likewise, those in the Southern Region should refrain from travelling unless they have urgent matters to attend to.
On the eight Delta variant cases reported in the central region, he said four were in Sibu and one each in Sarikei and Selangau.
The other two infected are Indonesians.
Of the four in Sibu, two are from Permai Timur, one each from Permai Jaya and Rantau Panjang.
Vaccination, Dr Annuar said, helped prevent severity as seen from the 58 cases reported in Sibu on Aug 22, of which 23 cases (or 40%) were in Category One (asymptomatic) and 34 cases (59%) were in Category Two (mild symptoms).
On vaccination for adolescents, he said those aged 16 and 17 might get their shots by this month.
“A number of cases involve those below 18 years, so it is good that we can start vaccinating them,” he added. — By ANDY CHUA
