Farm in Kalumpang shut down for causing pollution

MDHS officers sealing off the poultry farm in Kalumpang, Hulu Selangor.

A POULTRY farm in Kalumpang, Hulu Selangor was ordered to close for two weeks for causing environmental pollution.

This was discovered during a joint operation involving the Hulu Selangor District Council (MDHS), police, Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS), National Water Service Commission (SPAN), Environment Department (DOE), Hulu Selangor Veterinary Services Department and the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry.

Also present was area councillor Abdul Mun’im Roslin.

In a statement, MDHS said it had received complaints from affected residents who claimed that the farm was discharging effluent into a creek, causing the water to be cloudy and emitting a foul smell from chicken droppings.

A preliminary survey at the location by a MDHS health officer confirmed the complaints as valid.

The operation was carried out with the MDHS’ Technical Department to identify the cause.

An inspection was also done on the premises with the farm manager present.

MDHS found about 50 small reservoirs with black water and sewage waste on the premises.

Whenever it rains, overflow from the reservoir into the creek is inevitable.

It was found that the farm had failed to comply with the notice issued by MDHS dated April 26 and July 14, 2021, and it had also failed to appoint a panel of contractors under the MDHS for solid waste disposal.

The district council issued a 14-day Business Premises Closure Notice (from July 27 to Aug 9) to the farm manager in compliance with By-Laws 43 (1) (a) and (b), Licensing and Industry By-Laws (MDHS) 2007.

The three main gates of the farm were locked, chained and sealed.

MDHS said it would monitor the farm throughout the closure period.

Follow-up action from the technical departments involved will be done according to MDHS’ building plan and business licence to ensure that the premises complies with all technical requirements.
