Activities for George Town Festival lined up till July 18

PENANG will kick-off a week-long galore of virtual programmes in conjunction with George Town Festival (GTF) 2021 which is being held from today till July 18.

Themed ‘A Festival for Everyone’, this year’s GTF marks its 12th edition with a series of ‘pandemic-proof’ events, all held online this year.

Penang tourism committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said that the online programmes to be showcased include digital theatre, Chinese orchestra music, online audio-immersive theatre, short film festival, video art screening, virtual projection mapping, docudrama screening and exhibitions, among others.

“Penang has manoeuvred and explored different methods of festival-making.

“By harnessing the limitless potential of technology, GTF 2021 will connect local talents with creatives from various continents and countries, namely the United Kingdom, Singapore, Iran, India, Spain, Indonesia, the United States, Brazil, France and Poland,” he said.

Yeoh said that GTF 2021 will continue its decade-long legacy as the state’s forerunner in the creative ecosystem, by redefining festival-making in the new normal to continue inspiring generations of art lovers and practitioners.

“Although the physical events had to cease due to the sharp increase of Covid-19 cases in the nation, we wanted to keep the true essence and emphasis of GTF, which is accessibility of arts to all walks of life.

“GTF’s core value is to promote inclusivity for all, which also means making the arts accessible in times of pandemic and restriction measures.

“Though we harbour hopes to strategically re-flourish our creative scene in a post-pandemic era, the show and momentum must go on despite our current circumstances,” he added.

Yeoh said that the creative industry was among the sectors to bear the worst brunt of the pandemic, adding that the state government had stood by the industry by channelling financial assistance, launching programmes and forming partnerships to ensure a sustainable growth.

In 2020, the first-ever online edition of the GTF had successfully attracted a total of 68,342 local and international viewers.

George Town celebrated its 13th anniversary as Unesco World Heritage Site on July 7.

GTF 2021 is a George Town World Heritage Incorporated project organised by TLM Event, endorsed by the Penang government and supported by Penang Island City Council and Penang Global Tourism.
