POLICE in Penang busted a drug smuggling syndicate that has been active since early this year, seizing drugs worth RM310,000 and arresting three of its members.
State police chief Comm Datuk Sahabudin Abdul Manan said a team from North Seberang Prai Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department detained a man at Butterworth’s industrial zone on Wednesday at about 7pm.
“Police inspected two cars parked along Jalan Perusahaan Mak Mandin and found drugs believed to be syabu (methamphetamine) and heroin inside, ” he said in a statement.
In a follow-up operation, police detained two more suspected syndicate members in that area at 8.20pm on the same day.
Confiscated during the operation were 15,902gm of heroin and 3,622gm of syabu, worth about RM310,000.
“The drugs can cater to 97,620 addicts. We also seized a motorcycle, two necklaces worth RM8,700 and two rings worth RM4,515, ” he said.
The syndicate members are aged between 24 and 26.
Comm Sahabudin said background checks showed the second and third suspects have seven criminal records between them. The first suspect has no prior record.
“They will be remanded for five days until Monday to assist in investigations, ” he said.
