Toyota Corolla Cross sport utility vehicle (SUV)

THE new Toyota Corolla Cross sport utility vehicle (SUV) offers a stylish exterior design, high-quality performance, exceptional comfort, roomy interior space and top-notch safety features.

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd has introduced the fully-imported Corolla Cross units from Thailand, before local production starts by year-end.

Two variants are available – the 1.8G priced on-the-road without insurance at RM124,000 with sales tax exemption, and the higher grade 1.8V at RM134,000 with sales tax.

The front-wheel driven, five-seater Corolla Cross was developed based on the “Corolla meets SUV” concept to offer the capabilities, comforts and utility that Toyota’s best-selling car globally is known for – in a SUV body type.

It is powered by a 1.8-litre petrol engine (2ZR-FE) and seven-speed continuously variable transmission (CVT) with sequential shiftmatic, functions carried over from the Corolla sedan, thus providing ample power and torque.

Like the Corolla sedan’s powertrain, the 1.8-litre 16-valve DOHC engine with dual VVT-i (variable valve timing with intelligence) outputs 139ps at 6,400rpm and 172Nm of torque at 4,000rpm.

In terms of size, the Corolla Cross has a bigger footprint than the Toyota C-HR but isn’t as large as the Toyota RAV4.

Built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform which is also adopted by the current Corolla and C-HR, the Corolla Cross aims to deliver outstanding quietness and comfort, and optimised stability, agility and visibility for an enjoyable driving experience.

Its elevated driving position contributes to a wide field of view, and helps minimise blind spots.

The car has a an 18-degree approach angle to better tackle the sharp inclines and large speed bumps in urban Malaysia.

A new torsion-beam suspension ensures a stable, cushioned ride while a class-leading minimum turning radius of 5.2m provides responsive handling and superior manoeuvrability.

Its large and spacious door openings make entering or exiting the vehicle easy, even when carrying a child.

Other highlights include the roomy and luxurious-looking interior which has ample headroom, and abundant 440 litres of rear luggage space with a temporary spare tyre.

Occupants in the back can take advantage of the rear seats which can be reclined up to six degrees, rear seat armrest with cup holders, rear air vents and USB ports to charge smart devices.

The Corolla Cross is fitted with advanced safety features and technologies that earned the vehicle the maximum five-star Asean NCAP (new car assessment programme) rating.

The 1.8V grade Corolla Cross illuminates the road with Bi-LED front headlamps, LED daytime running lights and LED rear lamps (both with light curtain) and cruises on larger 225/50 R18 tyres.

This higher grade variant also has the Toyota Safety Sense suite of safety features and driver’s assistance systems which include a pre-collision system (PCS), lane-departure alert (LDA) with steering assist and lane tracing assist (LTA), dynamic radar cruise control (DRCC), automatic high-beam, and blind-spot monitor (BSM) with rear cross traffic alert (RCTA).

The Corolla Cross also has a digital video recorder (DVR) at the front (optional for rear), to record road mishaps.

Additionally, a vehicle telematics system (VTS) can track the SUV’s position using GSM/GPS signals in the event of theft or emergencies.

There’s also a wireless charging pad for compatible smartphones.

Other premium conveniences are the 3D panoramic view monitor and a powered back door with kick sensor.

The Corolla Cross comes with a five-year, unlimited mileage warranty and is available in five colours – Platinum Whitel Pearl, Red Mica Metallic, Nebula Blue Metallic, Metalstream Metallic and Graphite Metallic.
