FOUR people including a 49-year-old mechanic in Machang Bubok, Bukit Mertajam, were detained after police raided a paper factory turned drug processing lab.
Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Shafee Abd Samad said police crippled the drug syndicate and seized RM2.9mil worth of drugs believed to be syabu during the 7.30pm raid on Monday.
“During the operation, police detained four local men including the 49-year-old mechanic whom we believe is the mastermind, ” he said during a press conference at Central Seberang Prai District police headquarters.
Police seized several containers of liquid chemicals and drug-processing equipment.
Confiscated narcotics included 66kg of syabu, 35 containers containing 885 litres of liquid chemicals and 37 litres of liquid syabu that can produce 14.8kg of syabu crystals.
Syabu is the local name for methamphetamine, a potent central nervous system stimulant abused as a recreational drug.
“We also confiscated three vehicles worth RM230,000, a gold necklace worth RM1,000 and RM1,150 in cash, ” he said.
Police froze three bank accounts, believed to have been used by the syndicate, containing RM49,575.91.
ACP Shafee said the 49-year-old suspected mastermind of the syndicate had been active since last August and the drugs were believed to be for local distribution.
The other three suspects aged between 38 and 42 are unemployed.
“All of the suspects have been remanded for seven days until March 15, ” he said.
Police are still investigating if the syndicate has other members at large.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking.
