World Photography Organisation and Sony Malaysia have revealed that Yoganathan Loganathan is Malaysia’s National Award winner for the Sony World Photography Awards 2021.
The National Awards programme is an initiative set up by World Photography Organisation and Sony to support local photographic communities around the world, with 53 countries taking part this year.
More than 330,000 images from 220 territories were submitted to the Sony World Photography Awards 2021 and over 165,000 were entered into the Open competition (from which the National Awards winner was selected).
Yoganathan was anonymously selected by judges for his photograph “Ray of Hope”, entered into the Natural World & Wildlife category of the Open competition.
The scene featuring a long-tailed macaque, also known as crab-eating macaque, was photographed in a mangrove forest in Kuala Gula, Perak.
He was walking through the forest searching for birds or snakes to photograph during the evening.
Then, he saw a group of macaques foraging through the mud for their last meal of the day before the sun went down.
This particular photo was taken at sunset, when the sun’s rays fell on the macaque as it looked up — a picture of hope for the future.
A marine biology graduate, Yoganathan aspires to be an animal welfare officer.
His dream career is still in the works, but he has found a way to show his passion and enthusiasm for animals through photography.
As a wildlife photographer, he believes that it is his responsibility to not only bring out the extrinsic beauty of animals and nature, but to also capture the moments that tell the story of nature and its importance.
Commenting on his win, Loganathan said, “First of all, I would like to thank World Photography Organisation for this award.
“I would like to thank my family and friends who support my passion.
“My friends always teased me for having a ‘strange’ ambition.
“Nevertheless, I have walked my own path while learning from everyone and everything that life has thrown at me along the way.”
As Malaysia’s National Award winner, Yoganathan will receive Sony digital imaging equipment.
The overall winners in the Student, Youth, Open and Professional competition of the Sony World Photography Awards 2021 will be announced on April 15 via World Photography Organisation’s digital and video platforms.
