THE Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) has come up with Sarawakian-themed ang pow packets to celebrate Chinese New Year.
To commemorate the coming Year of the Ox, the red packets feature buffalo racing, a major highlight of the Babulang festival celebrated by the Bisaya community of Limbang in northern Sarawak.
Traditionally used on farms to prepare padi fields for planting, buffaloes are a significant part of the Babulang festival, a celebration to mark the end of the harvesting season.
“We want to take this opportunity to highlight Sarawak’s uniqueness, in this case our diverse cultural festivals such as the Babulang festival, ” STB chief executive Sharzede Salleh Askor said.
She said the ang pow packets would be distributed among STB’s tourism industry partners and visitors as well as Tourism Malaysia offices in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Peninsular Malaysia.
“The distribution of these red packets is one of our efforts to promote Sarawak tourism, ” she added.
The ang pow packets will also be available at STB’s visitor information centres in Kuching, Sibu and Miri from Jan 15. — By SHARON LING
