THE community of Kampung Baru Sempalit in Raub, Pahang, has successfully pooled together a large sum of funds within three days to help a fellow member suffering from sarcoma.
Deputy National Unity Minister Senator Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker said the crowd-funding effort was started by Sempalit Voluntary Patrol Scheme (SRS) chief Lee Khet Min on Dec 28 through the community’s WhatsApp group.
In just a short period of time, a total of RM110,955.33 was collected for Sam Kah Choy even in the midst of economic challenges caused by Covid-19, said Ti.
Sam has been suffering from sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that most often occurs not only in the bones, muscles, tendons, cartilage, nerves, fat and blood vessels of the arms and legs, but can also affect other areas of the human body.
The money would be used for Sam’s medical treatment.
Ti, who attended the handover ceremony recently, said the noble initiative mobilised by the SRS group proved that the community’s spirit of unity was at an exceptional level.
“The high amount collected in such a short period shows that the local community is concerned about what is happening in their neighbourhood.
“This also shows that the SRS under the National Unity Ministry not only carries out its security functions well, but will take additional initiatives in helping in the welfare of the local community, ” he said.
