POLICE in the southwest district of Penang have cut the power supply to a shop in Batu Maung for carrying out an illegal public lottery draw.
Balik Pulau OCPD Supt A. Anbalagan said the unlicensed draw was conducted at the back of the premises.
“The sundry shop was used as a front to carry out the activities, ” he said on Friday.
Supt Anbalagan said four sites in the district had their power cut this year for carrying out illegal gambling activities.
Action was taken with the support of Tenaga Nasional Berhad pe rsonnel under Section 21A (1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
Supt Anbalagan advised the public against getting involved in illegal gambling as they could be charged in court.
“Building owners can also be charged if they allow their premises to be used for illegal gambling, ” he said.
Supt Anbalagan added that the police welcomed cooperation from the public and urged them to call the nearest police station if they came across such activities.
