Sports groups now eligible for aid scheme

ALL the 48 sports associations and clubs registered with the Penang Sports Council (PSC) will now be eligible for the Sports Association Management and Administration Assistance Scheme.

The scheme is divided into four categories, namely A (RM20,000), B (RM15,000), C (RM5,000) and D (0).

The amount of grant for each association or club will be determined by an evaluation on its annual performance in administration and management.

Penang youth and sports committee chairman Soon Lip Chee said the scheme stressed the importance of administration and management of each sports association.

“It serves as an encouragement in ensuring sports development is carried out in an efficient way, ” he said at a press conference at Komtar.

The one-year evaluation period will be from today to Nov 30 next year, with each association or club evaluated by the PSC based on 10 criteria.

PSC will look at each association’s compulsory documents to be submitted to the Sports Commissioner of Malaysia, involvement in PSC programmes and internal administration in accordance with the association’s constitution and development programmes.

Other aspects to look into include the organisation of competitions for players, coaching and technical official courses plus the establishment of a database of athletes, coaches and technical officials.

Soon said that previously, fund assistance would be given only to sports associations based on their athletes’ achievements and their involvement in Malaysia Games (Sukma).

“Among the types of aid given previously were allocations for the appointment of coaches, organisation of programmes, training venue rental subsidy, athletes’ training allowance, organisation of tournaments and participation in tournaments plus training and competition equipment subsidies.

“Many sports associations need to be more active in organising programmes, tournaments, clinics and workshops.

“They also need to be more active in terms of administration and management.

“If the administration and management of a state sports association are strengthened, athletes will thrive, ” he said.
