KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has been selected as Sabah’s first facility to test and research the effectiveness of a new Covid-19 test kit from a Wuhan, China-based company.
The test kits were brought in by the Sabah-China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) to help fight against the respiratory virus in the state.
SCCC secretary-general Tan Kok Jyh said the cooperation between UMS and SCCC helps boost relations and information-sharing between the two groups.
“We are concerned about the Covid-19 situation in Sabah and with these new test kits that are different from what is available in the market currently, we hope to see tests and results come out more accurately and quickly, ” he said.
He said they chose UMS to embark on the tests and research due to the university’s good reputation.
Tan said this after handing over samples of the products to UMS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Taufiq Yap Yun Hin on Friday (Nov 27).
Yap expressed his gratitude to SCCC for their trust in UMS to conduct such important research.
He said such cooperation is needed due to what is happening in Sabah because of the pandemic.
Yap added that he hopes the close rapport between both parties would continue in various aspects for the benefit of the community.
