AEON Retail Malaysia is collaborating with telemovie character Mak Cun to promote entrepreneurship as well as growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) while upholding the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
As part of the tie-up, the Mak Cun Anjung Orang Kita telemovie highlights the retailer’s efforts to empower SMEs amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Additionally, Mak Cun Anjung Orang Kita booths are available at Aeon Big Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur and Aeon Shah Alam, Selangor.
The outbreak has caused hardship to many local entrepreneurs and an unemployment rate of 4.7%, according to the Department of Statistics.
One of the SDG targets is to promote development-oriented policies that support productive activities, decent job creations, entrepreneurship as well as creativity and innovation while encouraging the formalisation and growth of micro, small and medium-size enterprises.
“This telemovie is our way of getting the Aeon team to support local communities and other people in need,” said Aeon Retail Malaysia chief executive officer Shafie Shamsuddin.
“We have the capacity to include the local community to the economic development by providing a platform, both online and through physical stores.
“This is one of our commitments in supporting the growth of local communities.”
Through this move, Aeon hopes to welcome more SMEs to be a part of its team. The retailer currently has more than 50 chain stores under its multiple brand flagship.
Aeon has also been working with the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry to empower SMEs through programmes such as the Buy Malaysia Campaign, Bumi Kenyalang Carnival and Majlis Amanah Rakyat Entrepreneur Programme.
It has supported Mara by opening five of its malls to 29 Mara entrepreneurs for three months to showcase, promote and sell their products. During that period, a total of RM1.6mil in sales was raised.
To date, Aeon has more than 170 SME entrepreneurs who are part of Aeon partners retailing in all Aeon outlets.
Mak Cun, the telemovie’s main character, is a high-spirited local entrepreneur who sells beauty creams and her journey inspires many women to seize opportunities.
It stars Erma Fatima, Aiman Tino, Datuk Aaron Aziz, Arash Mohamad, Datuk Rahim Razali, Azad Jasmin and Fazlina Ahmad Daud.
