Do your duty and be counted

JOHOR BARU: The Statistics Department is targeting 3.7 million Johoreans, who make up 11.5% of the total 32.7 million population in Malaysia, to take part in the Population and Housing Census 2020 (e-Census).

Chief statistician and Census 2020 Commissioner Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said that as of Oct 6, about 15% of the total population including 560,000 people in Johor had submitted details using the e-Census questionnaire.

“To get more people to take part, we are actively publicising Census 2020.

“Another strategy to boost the programme is sending postcards with their Invitation Code (IC) to people in selected areas in Johor.

“We are confident Johoreans will play their part in this census exercise, ” said Mohd Uzir when contacted here.

He said the first phase of the census — the e-Census and computer-assisted telephone interviews — had been extended until Dec 21.

He announced that the second phase of the Population and Housing Census 2020, originally scheduled from Oct 7 to 24, had been postponed to Jan 20-Feb 6,2021, in view of the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in Malaysia.

He urged those who had yet to answer the questionnaire, to do so at

“This is to reduce the number of face-to-face interviews and prevent the risk of Covid-19 infections.

“The population and housing data is very important for the government to formulate policies for the well-being of the nation.

“This will ensure that every plan meets the needs of the target groups and no one is left out, ” he added.

Mohd Uzir said pre-registration for the e-Census was compulsory.

Based on data, he said Putrajaya recorded the highest e-Census responses with a total of 62%, followed by Perak (17.4%), Johor (14%), Penang (13.6%), Negri Sembilan (12.3%), Kuala Lumpur (11.6%) and Selangor (11.2%).

The poorest response was from Kelantan (4.1%), Sabah (4.3%) and Terengganu (4.6%).

Other states such as Perlis recorded a total of 9.1% followed by Labuan (8.9%), Melaka (8.7%), Pahang (7.7%), Kedah (7.7%) and Sarawak (6.5%), said Mohd Uzir.
