JOHOR BARU: Ten foreign investors who had invested in Johor before the movement control order (MCO) was imposed, have resumed their projects which are expected to create more job opportunities for locals.

Johor investment, cooperatives, entrepreneurship development and human resource committee chairman Mohd Izhar Ahmad said most of the projects were in Pasir Gudang and Iskandar Puteri.

He said the projects would create jobs in the electronics industry, manufacturing and service sectors.

“We know the locals need job opportunities and the returning investors need local manpower so we are addressing both their needs by organising job search programmes, ” he said after officiating the Career Week programme in Galleria@Kotaraya here.

Apart from the existing investors, Mohd Izhar said others from the Middle East have expressed their interest to invest in Johor and that discussions are still ongoing.

The three-day Career Week programme is the first job fair organised this year by the state government’s Unit Strategik Modal Insan Johor.

The unit’s general manager Saifuddin Abdul Rahman said the event was held simultaneously at three separate locations in Johor Baru, Kluang and Muar.

He said 31 employers participated in the programme, offering 1,120 job opportunities for those with Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia to degree qualifications.

“More than 1,000 eager job seekers turned up for interviews that were carried out online under the new normal at our programme.

“Most of the job seekers were fresh graduates and those who lost their jobs due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Job seekers are advised not to give up even if they are not hired this time around as there are still many job opportunities out there in companies that need locals such as the manufacturing industry, ” he said.

Saifuddin said the unit was also working with registered institutions to offer skills upgrading courses for the unemployed such as in welding and scaffolding to help increase their employability.
