WHEN a woman is cornered by an assailant, she needs to react intelligently to survive the attack.
As such, the women’s wing of Puchong MCA division is organising a Women Safety Seminar focusing on what women should do when facing a potential rapist.
Its chief Wong Ngan said the aim was to give women the knowledge to survive such attacks.
“The venue can accommodate up to 300 people only.
“So, we hope those who attend will pass on what they have learnt to their friends and family, ” she said.
Puchong MCA chairman Datuk Liew Yuen Keong said the seminar was unique as it did not focus on prevention but on how to respond when attacked.
“Usually, such seminars will focus on prevention. But this one will tell them what is going through the rapist’s mind so that they can increase their chance of survival and escape.
“This Women Safety Seminar will be conducted by an expert in psychology and taekwondo, ” he said.
The expert is Dr Wong Kok Fye, who is a member of the American Psychological Association. He is also a taekwondo black belt 5th Dan holder.
Kok Fye said it was important for women to stay calm during an attack.
“This is easier said than done because there will be many things going through the victim’s mind.
“However, if the woman has been told what to expect and how to react, perhaps there will be a better outcome.
“In this seminar, I will be talking about what goes on in the mind of a rapist during on attack, based on research, so that women will be better prepared if they ever find themselves in such a situation.
“I will also teach them how to use psychological, self-defence and martial arts skills.
“There is a lot of information on the Internet about how to escape a rapist, some of which may cause more harm than good.
“The victim must be able to assess the situation and react accordingly to survive the attack, ” he said.
The three-hour seminar will take place on Sept 27 from 1pm at Kampung Seri Kembangan Section 3 Community Hall, in Jalan SK 3/6, Seri Kembangan, Selangor.
It is open to women of all ages. The seminar will be conducted in Mandarin.
Participants must wear sports attire.
Entrance is free for MCA members and RM15 for others. Non-members can sign up for membership during registration for a fee waiver. Seats are limited.
