TWENTY-FIVE Lions Club chapters (Region 1 and 2) have pledged to support Penang’s e-learning programme meant to provide underprivileged students with digital learning devices.
A sub-task force set up for the ‘E-Refurbishing to E-Learning Computer Programme’ has been tasked to give continuous supply of used computers or laptops to deserving students.
The move would also help solve the indiscriminate disposal of e-waste.
Penang women and family development committee chairman Chong Eng said the programme was to ensure that digital learning devices were available for every needy student.
“We believe this collaboration would further narrow the digital divide gap among students.
“I would like to commend the 25 Lions Club chapters which are helping the state in getting digital learning devices and having them repaired before being sent to the needy students.
“Apart from desktops and laptops, donors are also welcome to donate other smart devices such as smartphones and electronic tablets,” she said during a press conference in Komtar.
Programme sub-task force head Chong Soon Kheng said they hoped to collect at least 200 units of used computers or laptops by Sept 26.
“Units which are repairable will be given out to the needy students while others that can’t be repaired will be disposed of according to the e-waste procedures,” he said.
Also present were Penang Lions Club district governor Datuk Yeoh Moh Chai, Penang Green Council general manager Josephine Tan and Lions CLub International District, Region 1 chairperson Ricky Khoo.
